Welcome to the first debate of the 2024 US Presidential Election, also known as the 2024 WWE Wrestling Match!
First, let's welcome the 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump, wearing a red tie and walking onto the stage surrounded by his team, with a fierce look in his eyes, showing no regard for anyone. On the other side, we have the current President of the United States, Joe Biden. He appears a bit travel-worn and is moving slowly, so please be patient.
Let's start with some background. The tradition of US presidential election debates dates back to 1858, with the debates between President Abraham Lincoln and Senator Stephen Douglas. Lincoln ultimately won the election. For many years, presidential debates were sporadic until the 1960 debate between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon, which was broadcast live on television. This established the tradition of the presidential debates every four years.
In the 1960 debate, Nixon was expected to have the upper hand due to his knowledge of foreign policy. However, he struggled with the live television format. His pale complexion, grey suit that clashed with the background, refusal to wear makeup, and the sweat caused by the strong stage lights all negatively impacted his image with the public. As a result, he performed poorly in the first debate. After the debate, polls showed that Kennedy, who had been slightly behind Nixon, took a slight lead. After three debates, Kennedy ultimately won the presidency, becoming the 16th President of the United States.
Presidential debates are held every four years, where the two candidates must face each other in person in a hall, engage in a war of words, present their policies, and point out each other's problems and shortcomings.
First, let's look at the stats of our two senior contenders. Trump has a record of one win, one loss, and one KO. He defeated Hillary Clinton in the 2016 US Presidential Election, becoming the 45th President of the United States. Biden, on the other hand, defeated Trump in the 2020 US Presidential Election. Therefore, this debate is a chance for Trump to seek revenge, and we eagerly await his performance.
The referee for this debate is CNN's chief anchor, Jake Tapper. As a journalist, his professional ethics require him to remain neutral and not support any political party. He has also declared himself to be non-partisan, so he will not favor either side in this debate.
Candidates will each receive a pen, a notepad, and a bottle of water, but no other props are allowed. Additionally, during the two commercial breaks, campaign staff are not permitted to interact with the presidential candidates.
Each candidate will have two minutes to answer the questions posed by the moderator. This includes one minute for an initial response and one minute for rebuttal. The moderator has the discretion to extend the question time by one minute. While a candidate is answering a question, their microphone will be turned on, and the other candidate's microphone will be turned off to prevent interruptions.
"President Biden, since you took office, prices in the United States have skyrocketed, with housing prices increasing by 30%. What do you have to say about this?"
Clearly, economic issues are his Achilles' heel. Biden, of course, was well-prepared and immediately deployed a classic strategy: passing the buck. Biden aimed to shift the blame to Trump. He said, "From the day I took office, look at what Mr. Trump left us. Before I took office, the US economy was in free fall, with an unemployment rate of 15%. The national economy was a mess." Trump showed a disdainful expression at this point.
Biden continued, "We got the economy back on track, created 800,000 manufacturing jobs, and worked hard to lower housing prices to ensure that the working class can afford homes and capped rent prices."
"We also lowered the prices of prescription drugs in the US, down to $15, to ensure that Americans can afford their medication. We've been working tirelessly."
Now it's Trump's turn to respond to this issue. Trump immediately played his trump card, "Make America Great Again" (MAGA). He first affirmed America's greatness. He said, "We have the greatest economy in the world, and during my tenure, the US did not start any wars. Everything was great, but we didn't get the credit we deserved. The jobs created by the Biden administration were largely for immigrants, and inflation is terrible. He is killing our country."
Biden countered with a left hook: "I don't believe we are the greatest economy in the world. Trump rewarded the wealthy by enacting the largest tax cut in US history, amounting to $2 trillion. His budget deficit is higher than any other president's during their term. He says there were no wars during his tenure, but in reality, US troops were still killing people in Afghanistan during his presidency."
The moderator wanted to give Trump an additional minute to respond and asked, "During your tenure, the national debt reached a historic high. Because of your massive tax cuts, many of which were aimed at corporations rather than individuals, why do you believe corporations should receive tax cuts?"
Trump, unperturbed and unhurried, said, "Because tax cuts stimulate the economy. When big companies profit, the nation has more revenue. We are developing in unprecedented ways. We will also develop more oil and gas to stimulate the economy." Biden looked at Trump with a dazed expression.
Trump continued his attack: "During Biden's tenure, millions of criminal and mentally ill immigrants entered the US. He is destroying our country." Trump cleverly shifted the focus to Biden's most criticized issue, immigration, but the moderator wasn't having it. He reminded Trump to keep his answer focused on economic issues.
Dana Bash (CNN Senior Reporter): "The US Supreme Court has just overturned Roe v. Wade. What are your thoughts on this?"
Biden condemned the Supreme Court's decision, stating that it set America back 50 years. On the other hand, Trump praised the ruling, saying, "Over the past few years, I have been in communication with the Supreme Court justices, encouraging them to make this decision. And now, through my efforts, we have finally achieved it."
Trump took credit for the Supreme Court's decision to leave abortion rights to the states, leaving Biden in disbelief and showing an incredulous expression.
Moderator: "President Biden, during your tenure, the number of illegal immigrants in the US has reached a historic high, raising public concerns about safety. How do you plan to address this issue?"
Biden said, "We now have many border patrol agents and security forces protecting our borders, and we are not separating immigrant mothers and babies because of this. In fact, the phenomenon of illegal immigration has decreased by 40%, better than when Trump left office."
While discussing this issue, Biden started to become incoherent and did not address the core of the problem.
Trump said, "I really don't know what he's trying to say. I've mentioned before that we have the most dangerous border in the world. Terrorists from around the globe enter our country through the border, and people die every day because of these terrorists. That's why I decided to close the border, but he just lets it happen."
Moderator: "You decided to deport all illegal immigrants. Does this mean you will deport those who already have jobs and have been living in the US for decades?" Trump did not directly answer the moderator's question but instead criticized Biden, saying, "American veterans are homeless while illegal immigrants are living in New York apartments. I have high support among veterans, whereas Biden doesn't care about them."
Biden countered, "Since I took office, the treatment of veterans has improved significantly. Now, a million people have insurance. I respect veterans greatly because my son served in Iraq for a year. You're just a fool." As Biden spoke, he started to resort to name-calling.
